The brief started with two things: an olive grove and a pair of people who cook seriously. Daniel Marshall took both and built an entire design logic around them.

The house is oriented precisely along the rows of the olive grove — not as a gesture, but as a structural idea. Stand anywhere along the main axis and the grove extends the building into the landscape, the lines of trees becoming part of the composition. The Waihopai Valley rolls out beyond. It's a home that knows exactly where it is and makes the most of it.

The kitchen sits at the heart of the plan — generous, light-filled, designed for people who regard cooking as something worth doing properly. Expansive glazing keeps the valley in view while meals are prepared. The living spaces open to sheltered outdoor areas that were conceived from the start as an extension of the entertaining sequence, not as an afterthought. This is a home built around how its owners actually live.

The Waihopai Valley has a particular quality of light — long evenings, the vineyards catching gold in the late afternoon. The glazing, the orientation, the relationship between inside and out were all calibrated around that. You feel it most just before dinner.
