Raupara House

Rapaura is vineyard country — flat, open, ruled by horizon and sky. Most homes out here keep their heads down. Jimma Dillon had a different idea.

Rapaura House rises from the plain with a steeply pitched roofline and a signature turret — Jimma Dillon's own flourish, unmistakable against the Marlborough sky. Solid plaster gives the exterior its clean, sculptural presence; strong timber accents punctuate the form and bring warmth to what could otherwise read as purely architectural. It's a home that announces itself without apology, yet never loses its connection to the land it sits on.

Inside, the honesty continues. Hardwood floors, exposed trusses, a high-ceilinged central living space where kitchen, dining, and living flow into one another. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the vineyard in every direction, and large sliding doors open the living areas to generous hardwood decks. Passive solar orientation, thermal mass, and high insulation mean the house performs as well as it looks — through a Marlborough summer and deep into winter.

Building a Jimma Dillon design means executing the geometry precisely — the pitched forms, the turret detail, the junctions where complex roof planes meet solid plaster walls. It's the kind of work that rewards care. This one does.
