Springlands House

Lawson Cypress is a Marlborough timber. It weathers well here, and it carries the particular warmth of a material that belongs to the place it's used in. Matthew Hay's choice to clad this home entirely in it isn't incidental — it's the design's central idea.

From the street, the house reads as timber — honest and unhurried, with none of the visual restlessness that mixed cladding systems can produce. The natural exterior gives the home a settled quality, as though it has been here longer than it has. Inside, hardwood floors continue the material logic, carrying the warmth of the exterior through every living space.

Matthew Hay's precision shows in the details. The plan is tightly considered — nothing wasted, everything in the right place. Large sliding doors connect the living areas directly to an outdoor entertaining space designed to the same standard as the interior, in the same materials. In Marlborough's climate, where the evenings stay warm well into autumn, that transition between inside and out is one of the most important decisions in the design.

Springlands House is the kind of home that is easy to underestimate from a photograph. In person, the quality of the timber, the precision of the joinery, and the ease of the layout make themselves felt immediately.
